A Letter to Our Caregivers: Information about Pandemic Pay

To Our Amazing Right at Home Care Team,

Almost 2 weeks ago, our Premier Mr. Doug Ford announced a new program to provide additional temporary compensation to our province’s Front Line Essential Workers. This temporary 16-week compensation is called “Pandemic Pay” it is designed to increase compensation by $4.00 per hour from your normal wage levels for those working front line health care, like you.

Mr. Ford said: “These people (frontline workers) put themselves in harm’s way to care for our sick and vulnerable citizens…I am truly grateful, as are the people of Ontario, for their service, and it’s time we give something back to those who sacrifice so much day in and day out.”

On May 5th, Mr. Ford informed the Home Care Ontario (our Ontario Home Care Association) that this pandemic pay would only be paid to care workers working with government-funded clients. It would not be paid to care workers serving family-funded or insurance clients, like your clients. Mr. Ford has excluded professional caregivers like YOU, those who care for our sick and vulnerable citizens, simply because those sick and vulnerable citizens fund their own care. This is unacceptable.

Please know that as your employer, we strongly disagree with the government’s decision to exclude family-paid care services and want you to know that we value you, our Right at Home Professional Caregiver. We value the work you do and believe firmly that you should be entitled to the exact same treatment as other PSWs like you who are receiving the pay from the government.

You deserve equality, and we will be providing the equality you deserve through funding the temporary $4.00 per hour additional compensation above regular non-pandemic wages. Our Right at Home office will be paying this directly to you, even though the Government will not be reimbursing us. This additional temporary top-up reward will start on this pay cheque and continue every paycheque that you work your regular hours with us through August 13th, just like the top-up increases the government is providing other PSWs.

We thank you for everything you do. You do incredible work, each and every day. We value you. We want you to know how much we care and how much we appreciate the wonderful care you provide your Right at Home clients.

We will also work around the government care plan so that we are enhancing it.
