5 Fall Activities For Seniors

The autumn season is upon us, and that means it’s time to enjoy some fall-themed activities! We’ve listed 5 of our favourites, and though the title says they’re for seniors, we truly believe they’re excellent activities for just about everyone:

1. Bake Pumpkin Pie

There’s nothing that says fall quite like a pumpkin pie—though if you’re not a pumpkin fan, an apple pie, a rhubarb pie, or any kind of pie you prefer will do just as well!

Baking pies is gratifying in so many ways. You get to enjoy the fruits of your labour, and so do the people around you. You’ll also get a chance to experiment with different techniques and flavours, improve your baking skills, and savour all of the sights, smells, feelings—and of course, tastes—that come with a job well done.

Here’s a simple pumpkin pie recipe to get you started—there are hundreds of recipes that you can try out there. Mix and match different seasonings and techniques, find the perfect pie for you, and wow your friends and family on Thanksgiving, Hallowe’en, and/or any other day of the season! You don’t even need to get a pumpkin straight from the pumpkin patch; canned will do the trick, too.

2. Go To A Corn Maze

Corn mazes are a great way to spend an afternoon. They offer a simple test of your problem-solving and wayfinding abilities, and they’re a fun outdoor activity for the whole family. There are a bunch of amazing corn mazes around Winnipeg and Manitoba; the team over at Travel Manitoba has created a list of its top 5 corn mazes.

Most corn mazes have a lot of activities; there’s more to do than getting lost in walls of corn! Locations will often feature concession stands (they probably sell corn dogs), petting zoos, wild game preserves, periscopes, and more.

3. Pumpkin Carving

For an activity where you will need to visit pumpkin patches (or at least your local grocery store), consider pumpkin carving! It’s one of those fall events that’s fun for everyone; you get to show off your creative side, all while creating fun decorations you can use for the whole season.

Place a candle or tealight inside your carved pumpkin, and just like that, you’ve got a jack-o’-lantern! Resist the temptation to use the insides to make your pumpkin pie, though—the big, ornamental pumpkins used for carving usually don’t taste great.

4. Watch Scary Movies

A lot of our fun fall activities so far have been pretty active—but if you want to take a breather, spend time with friends and family, and enjoy a scare, you can watch a few scary movies!

Make some homemade popcorn, and host a scary movie night; you’ll have a blast. Whether you get a thrill from haunted houses, paranormal activities, slashers, or psychological thrillers, there’s never been a better time to watch a horror flick; there are some absolute classics being made right now! Go on Netflix, Prime Video, or any other streaming platform—and get ready for a scare.

5. Fall Scenery Walks

There’s nothing better than a bit of fresh air; here in Winnipeg, the fall season is one of the best times to take a stroll. Take a walk around your neighbourhood, visit a local park, or travel out to one of the many gorgeous large parks we have in the city. The Assiniboine Forest is particularly lovely at this time of the year; you’ll see a startling array of colours, crush fallen leaves underfoot, and enjoy the crisp, cool fall air.

Conclusion

These are just a few suggestions for fun activities you can do in the autumn; there are plenty of easy-to-make treats, ways to get active, and ways to stay cozy in the fall. You could go crab apple picking to get some fresh fruits, get Hallowe’en decorations ready for trick-or-treaters, or get your hands on some fresh cider; the possibilities are endless.
