Recently you may have read in the Toronto Star about Doris Landry.   The 84-year-old woman has out-lived her one-or-two month life expectancy and has now been stripped of the full-time in-home care that the Central CCAC and Central LHIN’s “Home First” program was providing for her. Her Niece, who has been caring for her in her home, now has to decide between working, and staying at home caring for her dying Aunt.

Last month, the Star told the story of Doris Landry, an 84-year-old woman who outlived the 90-day funding limit for the Central CCAC’s “Home First” program. In October, Landry’s care was cut from eight hours a day to three hours a day. Landry wanted to stay in her niece’s home in Lisle, Ont., outside of Alliston, but was unable to pay for personal support workers, and her niece Charlene Dunlevy was faced the prospect of turning down work to care for her aunt during the day.

Toronto Star: "Burlington’s Right At Home Fights To Keep Staff Caring For Elderly, Sick Patients"

The Burlington, Ont.-based operation delivers health services enabling seniors and the ill or infirm to stay out of hospitals and in their own homes. DePetrillo, Right at Home Canada’s vice-president of healthcare services, says the organization is aiming to grow into a nationwide network of about 8,000 employees in the next five years.

But there’s a human resources hurdle they have to overcome first.
